A clearer workflow

VAT calculator, step by step.

01

How to add VAT

Multiply the net amount by the VAT rate divided by 100. Add that VAT amount to the net amount to get the gross total. For a net amount of 100 at a hypothetical 20% rate, VAT is 20 and the gross amount is 120.

02

How to remove VAT

Divide the gross amount by one plus the VAT rate divided by 100. The result is the net amount; subtract it from the gross amount to find the VAT. For a gross amount of 120 at a hypothetical 20% rate, net is 100 and VAT is 20.

03

Use the rate that applies to your sale

This is an arithmetic calculator, not a determination of tax treatment. VAT rates and rules depend on the country, supply and circumstances. The starting rate is an example; check the applicable rate before using a result on an invoice.

04

From a calculation to an invoice

Use the result to understand your amounts, then create an invoice with the correct tax settings in InvoiceKO. Check the full invoice calculation, especially when you have several line items, discounts or rounding differences.

Good to know

Your questions,
answered.

Can I calculate VAT without an account?

Yes. This calculator runs on this page without signing in. The invoicing workspace requires an InvoiceKO account.

Does the calculator choose the correct VAT rate?

No. You supply the rate. The calculator calculates net, VAT and gross amounts using that rate. It does not decide whether a sale is taxable or exempt.

How are the results rounded?

Results are displayed to two decimal places. Invoice and tax reporting rounding rules can differ, so review your document totals separately.
